During this blog I will summarize the film “Where to invade next” which involves an American individual who travels from country to country learning ways on how to improve America as a whole. However, there is a twist to the film.
Michael Moore visit Italy first where he finds out that employers pay for people’s honeymoon as well as being paid for 7 or 8 weeks of vacation. When asked why he was told by the owner of Ducati motorbike that happy workers are productive workers. Next, Moore visit France where he witnesses how health the lunches are for students compared to that of American schools. After that he traveled to Norway where he found out that Norway was doing a better job rehabilitating inmates than that of the American Judicial system. Prisoners in Norway are similar to homes of middle class Americans as it is equipped with a washer, dryer, refrigerator, etc. Following Norway, Moore travels to Finland (home of the smartest children in the world) where he discovered that homework isn’t given to students. Students in the film added that if they do get homework it usually takes about 20 minutes to complete. He goes on to travel to Portugal where he discovers that drugs are decriminalized. Compared to the United States where prisoners are overcrowding due to inmates being arrested for nonviolent/drug use crimes. Next, Moore finds himself in Iceland where a bunch of corrupt bankers almost tanked the Icelandic economy. However, with the help of lawmakers and female CEOs they were able to bring these bankers to justice and avoid an economic meltdown. His next visit is Germany; Moore realized that children are taught about the Holocaust and the countries history extensively. The U.S. on the other hand teaches students little about their country's history. Finally, Moore finds himself in Tunisia where a conservative government is giving women certain rights. Moore incorporates ethos by having people such as Ducati’s owner, President of Slovenia, Iceland’s prime minister, and even prisoners of Norway. These individuals are experts in their field in that the things they do and say can be trusted. Iceland’s prime minister has background in law for instance. This allowed her to assist in taking down these corrupt bankers. Moore incorporates logos by providing details such as prisoners in the U.S. being used to make products for a large percentage of big companies; while Norway rehabilitates it’s prisoners. Moore uses pathos stuck out when he discussed drug arrest with a member of the Portuguese Ministry of Health. In a unappealing tone, Moore talks about how America uses drug usage and arrest as a way to control the African American population. The Portuguese representative then goes on to explain that arrest for drug possession is not the solution. Especially when it comes to race or skin color. Michael Moore objective for this film and all the traveling is to find ways to improve America. At the end, Moore realizes all these ideas are American; America just doesn’t know how implement these ideas. The Kairos of the film is now. We, Americans, need to start implementing our own ideas.

For this blog post I am going to use information that I heard and wrote down from the film “Where to Invade Next” in order to obtain my research question for my research paper.
Three topics from the film that intrigued me were U.S. prisoners being used to make products, Norway’s ability to rehabilitate inmates, and Portugal’s method of not arrest people for drug possession. Topic: U.S. prisoners Research question: Is America using prisoners as modern day slaves? Argument: Prisoners are being used by prisons all across the United States to make products for companies such as Jansport and given little to no compensation. They aren’t allowed to leave the place they work either. They are forced out of their homes and placed in a horrible living environment. Topic: Norway’s prison structure Research question: Should America structure prisons like that of Norway’s? Argument: America should take some ideas for their prison system such as a more clean, nicer environment. The fact that prisons are lifeless and dull makes it hard for inmates to remain sane and thus causes depression or even violence. Topic: Portugal and the drug policy Research question: Should America stop arresting individuals for drug possession/usage? Argument: America should stop arresting individuals for nonviolent crimes like drug possession as it only over crowds prisons. In addition, those individuals are getting the help they need in prison. It seems more like a time out instead.
Whenever someone writes a reflective piece they always look at what they learned from that incident. The individual focuses on being very descriptive; at the same time lacking the focus on reflection. When people look back at an event the tend to remember things that they didn’t before which is also known as hindsight. Some individuals will remember certain details immediately. However, some information will take time to remember. It helps that we remember certain information after time and since our memoir isn’t due until the end of the semester it helps allows us to build on our literary piece. When it came to my life-choice memoir I worked on it independently. The reason for that is because I haven’t told anyone in my household about the incident I was involved. The approach I took could have been better, but when I look at assignments I realized that I had to make it more descriptive and use diction that will intrigue the reader. The rhetorical mode I’m using is exposition in that I’m explaining a story about fake people and bad choices leads to trouble (cause and effect). I wrote my memoir when I was going through my old pictures in my phone. The reason for that is because I have a picture of that night and oddly enough it helped me remember little details of that night. I believe it was a good approach in that I remembered small details that I wouldn’t have remembered without the pictures. I wrote my memoir in room with some of my favorite music from 2016. This was not a good approach that I realized that I need peace and quiet to do my work. I left out details that I later remembered. I chose this topic, because I haven’t really gotten in trouble with authority until that day. Also, I had a decision to make which affected me in the long run. It was a good choice in that it made understand how to approach situations similar to this in the future. It brought back memories and it made me realize that part of being adult is making smart decision and that is what I shall do. Whenever I remember parts or details of that night I will edit my writing piece and build on to it. |
